Communication and Culture

I will say I do communicate differently with people. When I communicate with my friends and family it is different from communicating with families I work with, coworkers, colleagues or strangers that I meet for the first time.  I am from a different culture so I like to communicate with everyone the same way that I will want some else to communicate with me. I work with a lot of Hispanic families and strategies used to communicate effectively is ensuring that there is a translator present at all time to ensure that families with limited English are getting the same information as everyone else.
When I am around my family and friends, I feel free and relax to speak my mind but when working with families we have make sure we are sensitive and respectful in order for them to gain our trust and work together in the best interest of the child.
When communicating with the populations of families I work with, some strategies use are:
Listening carefully to be sure they are understood and validate what they say.
Follow up on any questions/concerns to ensure that their needs are met.
Pay attention to nonverbal cues and make sure that respect is prevailed at all times.

For this assignment, I chose to watch a show called “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” this is a show that I would not normally watch but chose it because I hear a lot about it and it appears to be very popular.  Watching the show with no sound was actually quite entertaining because that family was all over the place.  They had so many different things going on that I enjoyed figuring out what they were saying and meaning with their body language.   They are a very affectionate family so they were very touchy feely.  They use an enormous amount of facial and hand gestures.  They also use eye contact a lot as well.  When I watched the show again with sound I was surprised that I was pretty much dead on with their discussions and remarks just off of body language. I could tell when they were angry, arguing, happy sad, confused, and etc.  I could tell when they were having serious conversations or being sarcastic with each other.  They are very hands on and allow a lot of room for play in their theory and ideas.  I enjoyed the show will probably continue to watch it.

When I think of an effective communicator the first person I think of is President Obama.  President Obama has a commanding demeanor about himself that makes you want to listen to him.  I have watched several of his speeches and he looks into his audience giving eye contact which I believe to be very important in getting someone to actually hear and believe in what you are saying.  He speaks with authority and yet talks at a moderate tone which gives listeners a chance to listen as well as comprehend what he is saying. Yes, I would want to model some of his communication skills because I feel he is effective.  I would like to be able to speak in front of large groups without a quiver in my voice and be effective in making my words heartfelt and informative.

SHARING WEB RESOURCES.

I explored UNESCO link- http://www. UNESCO.org. There are links to information on culture, natural sciences, social and human sciences, communication and information, media services, and education(Early childhood ,secondary education, higher education ,inclusive education ,HIV &AIDS education, languages in education, science & technology). On the site ,I came across Inclusive Education. The Inclusive education is seen as the right of all children and as a part of quality education that meets basic learning needs and enriches lives. It focuses directly on vulnerable and marginalized groups that seeks to develop the full potential of every individual. The main goal of inclusive quality education is to end all forms of prejudice and foster social interaction The .’Vulnerable’ and ‘marginalised’ groups is made up of many different individuals deprived of their right to education.
The new information that I read about is called “The Language in Education.UNESCO encourages multi -languages in education because it has been proven to have positive impact on learning and learning outcomes.
There is information on access . For example, they have an article on ” Access, Public Investment, and Equity in ECCE” and this relate to what we are discussing this week. The site is very beneficial for educators. It talks about Quality in early childhood, investment and governance.

Lloyd DemMause:
"The source of most human violence and suffering has been a hidden children's holocust through history, whereby billions of innoncent human beings have been routinely mudered, bound stareved, raped mulitaled, battered and totured by their parents and other caregivers, so that they grow up as emotinally crippled adults and become vengeful time bombs who periodically restage their early traumas in sacrificial rites called wars".

Kahlil Gibran
"The things which the child loves remain in the domain of the heart until old age. The most beautiful thing in life is that our souls remaining over the places where we once enjoyed ourselves."

CHILD DEVELOPMENT AND PUBLIC HEALTH

I chose mental health of mothers, fathers, and families in general. The topic is meanigful to me because wanting to be a childhood professional you never know what type of issues that a child and his or her family may be dealing with. It is very important to me that I am aware of changes or issues that a child may be going through,so that if I observe different behavior, I can hopefully the child and family.I also know someone close to me that was diagnosed with depression at the age of fifteen and it was very hard for the family.
I found information at http://www.menshealthaustrialia.net/ A study was conducted of nearly 87,000 families in Britian and it was found that 21% of fathers and 39% of mothers experienced a period of depression by the time their children was twelve years old. 13% of mothers and 3% of fathers become depressed by the time their babies reach its first birthday. Divorced men are three times likely to committ suicide than any other. Suicide rates follows high for ages 30-34 and then ages 40-49. Married men have thwe lowest suicide rate.
I have learned that is very important to be aware of the signs of depression and or suicide. It is very important to communicate with parents and caregivers. It would be helpful for parents with teenagers to have resources available, just in case they have a teen in trouble or know of someone else that need help.

MY PERSONAL BIRTHING EXPERIENCE

I have not exprienced a personal childbirthing. I have two childrens but they were adopted. Health reasons occured which caused me not to be able to have children however I have a daughter and and a son. I drove one one of my sisters to the hospital to deliver. I sat in the labor room with her while the nurses connected her to the monitors to keep a check on her and the baby vital signs. When she reached 6cm.,the nurse came in and gave her and epidural shot, quickly after the shot the contractions started coming quicker, that's when I left out the room, the next minute the doctor came out and said that she had a baby boy.
I did research on how women deliver in Japan. Majority of the women in Japan refer to deliver their baby at home with mid-wives and then go to the hospital after the baby is born to make sure the baby and herself is okay. Japan have several small hospitals that are just for childbearing. The only differences that I can compare to what I exprerienced by reading about women in Japan is that we are not going to deliver our babies at home and we do not have mid-wives that come to your home for delivery.

I want to say thanks to all my colleagues for the help they have given me during these eight weeks. It has been a privilege and a honor working with a group of educators that already have a great start with their career in life. Their are a few of us now that are not affiliated in the childhood field of work, but hopefully with the help of Walden we will in the future.I have read different things on my colleague blogs; personal and education that was very interesting to me. Good Luck fellow colleagues and I wish all of you the best.
Ms. Darragh, I want to thank you as well for being an understanding instructor. As I said earlier, I have been out of school for twenty one years and this has been a challenge for me.

Ideals from NAEYC and DEC code of Ethics

NAEYC CODE OF ETHICS:

1-1.3: To recognize and respect the unique qualities, abilities and potential of each child.

1-2.2: To develop relationships of mutual trust and create partnerships with the families we serve.

1-4.5: To work to ensure that appropriate assessment systems, which include multiple source of information are used for purposes that benefit children.

DEC CODE OF ETHICS:

  • We shall build relationships with individual children and families while individualizing the curricula and learning environments to faciliate young children's development and learning.
  • We shall demonstrate our respect and concern for children, families, colleagues, and others with whom we work, honoring their beliefs, values and customs, language and culture.
  • We shall provide services and supports to children and families in a fair and equitable manner while respecting families, race, language, socioeconomic status, marital status and sexual orientation.
The significance of both of these etihics is for me to keep in mind that all children are equal but have different needs and it is my responsibility to provide the services to meet the needs of each individual.  I must build a relationship with the parents to show that I am supporting and understanding to their children.  The final thing that I have to do is show respect to each child for whom he or she is and prepare them for the future.

Quotes or excerpts from writings or speeches to the two peoples that I identified:
 3 quotes from T.Berry Brazelton:

A granchild is a miracle, but a renewed relationship with your own children is even a greater one.

Parents don't make mistake because they don't care, but because they care so deeply.

Grandparents who want to be truly helpful will do well to keep their mouth shut and their opinions to themselves until these are requested.

Dr Edward Zigler, states that reading is justr one aspect of cognitive development, and cognitive development is just one aspect of human development. A child's curiosity and belief that he or she can succeed are just as important to reading as knowing the alphabet.I am urging that we broaden our approach to literacy by focusing on the whole child.

Passion,Motivation and Wisdom from the professionals in the video

Louise D.Sparks, always wanted to be a teacher when she was young. She had a built in passion to make a contrributrion to the world with childrens. Her passion also was to make sure all childrens taught in environments in ways truly nuture thier ability to grow and develop to their fullness.

Sandy Escobido passion was from personal experience from growing up. She issues grants to eight preschools in the state of  Las Angeles,to help train parentrss how to advocate for their childrens. What motivates her is when she go to school meetings ands see parents writing and voicing their opinions.

Renita Cooper, she cares about the education of young children. She believe education is a civil rights issue. Her passion is that women have choices, women should be able to stay at home if they chose to with their kids.

Raymond Hernandez is a administrator. His motivation and passion is to go out into the classrooms and see what the kids need. His passion is when he have provided service to benefit a child's education.

Lakia Lera passion is from her personal back ground experiences. Her parents are from different countries. She came from an imigrant background. She had to help translate for her mom at different places,so that motivated her to become translator for researchers in education.

My Personal Childhood Web

I cannot honestly say I have five people that in influenced my childhood. i only have three peoples that really infiluenced me as a child,my mom and my grandparents(my mom parents). My mom was very young when she had me,so that meant my grandparents helped take care of me.My mom raised me as a single parent and has been a great inspiration in my life.My mom did whatever she had to do or needed to do take care of me. As I got older my mom and I got closer and there is nothing that I will not tell my mom or talk to her about. My grandparents were the best grandparents that any child could have had.Rest their soul now that the both are deceased. My grandfarther worked on a farm and my grandmother stayed at home.Whatever I needed for school my grandparents helped my mother get it for me.I send a thanks to heaven to them for helping my mom to raise me to become the woman that Iam today.
